Two letters dated Fort Ellis. Montana Territory, 1877 Nov 11 and 1878 Jan 5, to Samuel Howe, Ashton, Ill., describing Oliver Howe's experiences at the battle of Snake Creek (also known as the battle of Bear Paw) during the 1877 Nez Perce campaign, and describing garrison life at Fort Ellis. Also includes map by Charles Quillon drawn 1877 Oct 20, showing the Snake Creek battlefield and the positions of the opposing forces during the battle.
